Lever alternative that reads and ranks your inbound resume pile
Lever built its reputation on combining an ATS with a candidate relationship manager, so outbound nurture and inbound applications live in one place. That is a real advantage for teams whose hiring is sourcing-led, and the platform now folds in AI matching, screening (offered as an add-on powered by VONQ) and unlimited AI interview transcripts. One thing shapes every comparison: as of July 14, 2026, Lever does not publish prices. There are no public tiers. Pricing is described as available on request, scaled to team size and hiring needs, with Candidate Insights, AI Screening and Onboarding sold as separate add-ons. You find out what it costs by talking to sales.

AI assists · you decide · bias-audited (EEOC / NYC Local Law 144)
Lever is a sourcing-led ATS and CRM, quoted by sales, with AI screening sold as an add-on. Prescreener is a screening layer with published pricing that reads and ranks the inbound resume pile and runs alongside Lever or any other ATS.
Prescreener is a narrower product with a public price. It is not an ATS and it is not a CRM. It reads every inbound resume, applies the knockout and eligibility criteria you set, asks short screening questions, scores role-fit, and ranks the pile so recruiters open the strongest matches first, each with the reasons behind its place. Starter is $199 per month, Growth $499, Scale $1,290, listed on the pricing page. Buyers choose it over Lever in one specific situation: their problem is not a thin pipeline that needs nurturing, it is 500 unread applications on a single req. If your bottleneck is inbound volume rather than outbound sourcing, you are buying the wrong half of Lever. Prescreener runs alongside Lever or any other ATS, discloses AI use, is bias-audited to support EEOC and NYC Local Law 144, and ranks and flags rather than auto-rejecting. A recruiter always decides.
Side by side
Lever vs Prescreener, honestly
A fair look at what each does well. Both are capable tools. Here is where they differ.
| What matters | Prescreener | Lever |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A screening layer that reads, scores and ranks the inbound applicant pile | A combined ATS and candidate relationship manager built around sourcing and nurture |
| Reads and ranks the whole inbound pile | Yes. Every resume is parsed, knockouts applied, role-fit scored, pile ranked with reasons | AI matching in the platform, with AI screening offered as a paid add-on |
| Pricing transparency | Published: Starter $199, Growth $499, Scale $1,290 per month. No free plan | Not published. Quoted on request, scaled to team size, with add-ons priced separately |
| Best when your bottleneck is | Too many inbound applications and nobody with time to read them | Too few candidates, so you need outbound sourcing and long-term nurture |
| Works alongside your existing ATS | Yes. Not a system of record, so it runs next to Lever or any other ATS | It is the system of record. Teams standardize their stack on it |
| Bias audit and human-in-the-loop | AI disclosure, bias audits supporting EEOC and NYC Local Law 144, never auto-rejects | Enterprise compliance and reporting across the full hiring funnel |

Why teams pick Prescreener
One step that screens the whole inbound pile
Sourcing problem or reading problem
Lever is excellent when you have to go find candidates. If several hundred already applied and nobody has read them, a CRM does not help. Prescreener reads the pile and hands back a ranked shortlist.
The price is on the page
Starter is $199 per month, Growth $499, Scale $1,290. No demo gate, no add-on pricing to negotiate, and no sales call needed before you know what screening will cost you.
Screening is the product, not an add-on
Reading resumes, applying knockouts, scoring role-fit and ranking with transparent reasons is the whole job Prescreener does, rather than a module bolted onto a larger suite.
The honest read
Choosing between Lever and a screening layer
Lever, JazzHR and Jobvite are all the same company
This surprises a lot of buyers halfway through a shortlist, so it is worth knowing before you book three demos. Lever is a brand of Employ Inc. Employ announced the acquisition on August 5, 2022, and Lever joined a portfolio that already contained JazzHR, Jobvite and the NXTThing RPO business. Employ is backed by K1 Investment Management, and its own materials report serving more than 18,000 customers across a network of 1,200 partners.
The brands are positioned at different segments rather than merged into one product. In Employ's own framing, JazzHR is built for lean teams that want speed and simplicity, Lever is a talent relationship platform aimed at high-growth companies, and Jobvite carries the advanced analytics, automation and recruitment marketing for more complex hiring. Lever continued under its own brand after the deal, with its founder reporting in to Employ.
The practical consequence is that a shortlist of Lever versus Jobvite versus JazzHR is a segment decision inside one vendor, not three independent bets. That is not a criticism of any of them. It does mean the diversification you think you are getting by comparing the three is smaller than it looks, and that the roadmap and the commercial terms all come from one place. If a Lever quote comes back above budget, the natural next call is JazzHR, and you will be negotiating with the same company.
It also means the screening question lands the same way across all three. Each is a competent system of record, each has some form of AI matching, and none of them was designed to be the thing a recruiter opens on Monday to work 600 unread applications in priority order with a defensible reason attached to each one.
| Employ Inc. brand | Positioned for | Where the AI screening sits |
|---|---|---|
| Lever | High-growth companies wanting ATS and CRM together | AI matching in the platform. AI Screening is a paid add-on, powered by VONQ |
| JazzHR | Lean teams wanting speed and simplicity | AI-Powered Candidate Matching starts on the Plus plan, not the entry Hero plan |
| Jobvite | Complex hiring, analytics and recruitment marketing | Talent Fit matching, plus Bias Blocker. Quote only, no published rate |
| NXTThing RPO | Outsourced recruiting delivery | A service rather than a product |

Does Lever screen resumes with AI?
Partly, and the qualification matters commercially. Lever ships AI matching inside the platform, and it offers AI Screening as a separately purchased add-on powered by VONQ. So the answer to the question buyers actually ask is that the capability exists, but the part most people mean by screening is not included in the base product.
That is the same shape we have documented on Workday, where HiredScore AI is licensed apart from core Recruiting, and on SAP SuccessFactors, where the Joule entitlement and AI Units are bought separately. It is common enough in this category to be worth a specific question in every sales call: is the AI screening in the quote in front of me, or is it a line item somebody will add later?
The second question worth asking is what the ranking is computed against. Matching applications to a job posting inherits every vague line in that posting. Job descriptions are written to attract applicants, not to encode selection rules, and they list hard gates and nice-to-haves in the same paragraph. A requisition that says a commercial driver's license is preferred when it is really mandatory will produce a match score that quietly averages the two.
