Compare · HireVue

HireVue alternative that ranks your inbound resume pile

Teams comparing HireVue alternatives often like the structure of video interviews and assessments but find the platform heavy: long enterprise rollouts, large contracts, and a setup project before anyone is screened. For big organizations with a team to run it, HireVue is a capable suite. The gap people describe is wanting a faster, lighter way to deal with the very first problem in the funnel, which is the flood of inbound resumes that nobody has time to read.

It sits alongside the ATS you already run, sets up in days, and shows transparent reasons for every ranking. Why teams pick Prescreener

One step that screens the whole inbound pile

Ranks the pile, not a rollout

Rather than standing up a full assessment platform, you connect Prescreener, set your criteria, and start receiving a ranked inbound pile within days.

A ranked shortlist with reasons

Every applicant is scored on role-fit and eligibility, and the pile is ranked so recruiters open the strongest matches first, each with the reasons behind its place.

Light setup, compliance built in

Prescreener works alongside your ATS with AI disclosure and bias audits supporting EEOC and NYC Local Law 144, and a recruiter always makes the call.

The honest read

Choosing between HireVue and a screening layer

What HireVue is actually built for

HireVue is an enterprise interview and assessment platform. Its center of gravity is the structured, recorded interview: candidates answer a fixed set of questions on video or in a chat, responses are scored against a rubric, and the results feed a hiring decision that a large team can defend and audit. Around that sit game-based assessments, conversational scheduling, and the reporting a talent function needs when it hires thousands of people a year.

That is a real problem and HireVue solves it. If your recruiters are spending their week running the same forty-minute first-round call over and over, and the constraint is interviewer hours, a structured async interview genuinely removes that constraint. The retail, contact-center, and hourly employers who buy it are usually not confused about what they need.

The mismatch shows up when a team buys HireVue to fix a screening problem. Video interviewing evaluates candidates you have already decided to interview. It does nothing about the 380 applications you never opened, because those people never reached an interview stage. Buying an assessment platform to solve an unread-inbox problem is the most common expensive mistake in this category.

Where a screening-first layer fits instead

Prescreener works one step earlier in the funnel. It reads every application as it lands, applies the eligibility gates and knockout criteria you set for that requisition, asks your screening questions, scores role-fit, and hands back the pile ranked with a written reason under each candidate. Nobody is auto-rejected. A recruiter opens a list that is already ordered and makes every call.

The two tools are not really substitutes, which is worth saying plainly on a page like this. Plenty of large employers should run both: screening to decide who is worth interviewing, structured interviewing to decide who is worth hiring. The question is which one your budget should buy first, and that depends entirely on where the queue is backing up.

A quick diagnostic. Count the applications per open role and count the first-round interviews per recruiter per week. If applications per role is in the hundreds and interviews per recruiter is modest, your bottleneck is reading, not interviewing, and an assessment platform will sit half-used. If interviews per recruiter is the number that looks unsustainable, HireVue is pointed at the right problem.

Buying process, cost, and time to value

HireVue does not publish prices. Its pricing page describes packages and routes buyers to a demo, which in practice means an enterprise annual contract, a procurement cycle, and a rollout project before anyone is screened. Re-checked July 2026, that has not changed. For a large organization with a talent operations team, that is normal and manageable. For a fifty-person company, it is a long way to travel to fix a resume pile.

Prescreener publishes its plans: Starter $199, Growth $499, and Scale $1,290 per month, with Enterprise by quote and no free plan. Pricing scales with applicant volume and jobs rather than seats, which matters because a small recruiting team buried in applications is exactly the case where per-seat pricing gets the incentive backwards. Setup is connecting the tool, writing the criteria for a role, and reading the first ranked pile, usually within days.

One caveat in our own favor that we would rather state than hide: if you already own HireVue and are happy with it, adding a screening layer is an incremental purchase, not a replacement. Most teams who do this keep the assessment platform for the interview stage and use screening to decide who reaches it.

Compliance and candidate experience

Both categories are automated employment decision tools in the eyes of the rules that now govern them, and both carry real obligations. NYC Local Law 144 requires an independent bias audit and candidate notice. Several states have added their own requirements. Disparate impact liability under Title VII, the ADEA, and the ADA applies regardless, and active litigation against AI hiring vendors has made buyers considerably more careful about what they can document.

Prescreener discloses AI use to candidates, applies the same criteria to everyone, is bias-audited to support EEOC standards and NYC Local Law 144, and stores the criteria met, missed, and the evidence behind every ranking. The design constraint that matters most is that it ranks and flags but never rejects, so a person makes every employment decision and can explain it afterwards.

On candidate experience the honest comparison is mixed. Recorded video interviews are unpopular with a meaningful share of applicants and some will decline them. Resume screening is invisible to the candidate, which is easier on them but puts more weight on the employer to get the criteria right, because nobody is there to notice when a good applicant is scored badly for the wrong reason.

Good questions

HireVue vs Prescreener, answered

If you want a focused way to rank your inbound resume pile rather than a full interview and assessment suite, yes. Prescreener reads every resume, applies knockouts, scores role-fit and ranks the pile with transparent reasons, alongside your ATS, with a faster, lighter setup.
The same criteria are applied to everyone, results are bias-audited to support EEOC and NYC Local Law 144, and AI use is disclosed. Prescreener ranks and flags for recruiter review and never auto-rejects, so a human always makes the final decision.
HireVue does not publish prices. Its own pricing page describes packages ranging from Essential to Premium and routes buyers to a demo or sales conversation for a quote, re-checked in July 2026. Expect an enterprise annual contract. Prescreener publishes its plans openly: Starter $199, Growth $499, and Scale $1,290 per month, with Enterprise by quote.
Video interviewing evaluates candidates you have already shortlisted, usually by recording answers scored against a rubric. Resume screening happens one step earlier: it reads the full inbound applicant pile and decides who is worth interviewing at all. If your bottleneck is hundreds of unread applications rather than interview scheduling, screening is the step to fix first.
On the assessment and video-interview side, HireVue is compared with Modern Hire (now part of HireVue), Spark Hire, and Harver. But many teams evaluating HireVue actually have a screening problem rather than an interview problem, and in that case the useful comparison set is resume screening and ranking tools like Prescreener that read the inbound pile before interviews start, not more video platforms.
HireVue is built for large enterprises running structured assessments at scale, and the contract size and rollout reflect that. For a small or mid-size team whose real problem is too many inbound resumes and not enough time to read them, a lighter screening-first layer usually delivers value faster and at a published price. Match the spend to the bottleneck: assessment depth if you are interview-bound, screening speed if you are application-bound.
