HireVue vs SmartRecruiters: Pricing and AI Screening
HireVue and SmartRecruiters do different jobs and plug into each other: SmartRecruiters reads and ranks applications from its High Volume edition, while HireVue scores interviews and assessments after a candidate is invited. SmartRecruiters publishes one figure, $14,995 for the tier with no AI; HireVue removed its $35K floor in 2024. What each screens, what each costs, and which to buy first.

Short answer: HireVue and SmartRecruiters are not really rivals. SmartRecruiters is an applicant tracking system that reads and ranks the application pile from its High Volume edition up. HireVue is an interviewing and assessment platform that scores what a candidate does after they are invited, and it plugs into SmartRecruiters through a certified integration. HireVue even runs its own recruiting on SmartRecruiters. Neither publishes a usable price. The real decision is which step of your funnel is broken.
People compare these two because both show up on shortlists for high-volume hiring and both say "AI screening" on their websites. They mean different things by it. This article sets out what each one screens, what each one costs as far as the public record goes, and how to decide which to buy first, or whether you need either.

What does each one actually screen?
SmartRecruiters screens the application. Its pricing page lists "AI-powered Candidate Screening" and "Conversational AI Chat" as the two features that arrive with the High Volume edition, which SmartRecruiters marks as its most popular. Below that, Professional adds Winston Companion, an AI hiring agent, and Winston Match, which SmartRecruiters says "identifies the best candidates for your roles". The Essential tier, the only one with a published figure, has applicant tracking, CRM, onboarding, SMS, job distribution and scheduling, and no AI at all. Our SmartRecruiters AI resume screening breakdown covers each Winston product in detail.
HireVue screens the candidate, not the document. Its homepage describes evaluating "job-related skills, competencies, and potential beyond what a resume can show", through validated assessments, structured video interviews and scheduling. HireVue's own SmartRecruiters integration page makes the positioning plain: "No more sifting through resumes or conducting phone screens, so you can easily prioritize candidates by average recommendation or Hirevue Score." In other words, HireVue replaces the resume review with an assessment the candidate completes. It does not parse and rank the resumes you already received.
One correction worth making, because comparison sites still repeat it: HireVue does not analyze facial expressions. It dropped facial analysis in March 2020. Scores come from what a candidate says and does in the interview or assessment.
HireVue vs SmartRecruiters pricing
Neither vendor will give you a number you can budget from, but both have left more on the public record than most.
SmartRecruiters publishes one figure: Essential "Starting at $14,995". The page does not say per year, per month or per contract, so any article that writes "$14,995 per year" has added a word SmartRecruiters did not use. Professional, High Volume and Complete all say "Request Pricing". The catch for anyone comparing it with HireVue on AI is that the published price buys the tier with no AI in it. The screening that ranks applicants sits two tiers higher, at a price you only learn in a sales cycle. Full detail is in our SmartRecruiters pricing guide.
HireVue publishes nothing today. Its pricing page names an Essential package and a Premium package and routes buyers to a demo. It was not always that way: archived copies of hirevue.com/pricing from May 2022 and January 2024 said "Starts at $35K" for companies of 2,500 to 7,500 employees, later 2,500 to 5,000. By August 2024 the figure was gone. Procurement data from Vendr puts the average HireVue contract at $49,855 a year, from a small sample of deals. Our HireVue pricing article walks through each of those sources.
| Pricing point | HireVue | SmartRecruiters |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest figure the vendor ever published | $35,000 starting point (removed in 2024) | $14,995 for Essential, current |
| Does that figure include AI screening? | It covered the interviewing platform | No. AI screening starts at High Volume |
| Price of the AI screening tier | Quote only | Quote only |
| Third-party contract data | Vendr average $49,855 a year, small sample | No reliable public contract data |
| Contract shape | Enterprise annual | Enterprise, often multi-year |
If you buy both, you pay for both. A team that runs SmartRecruiters High Volume and adds HireVue for interviews is carrying two enterprise contracts that each have an AI screening story, which is a reasonable stack for a large employer and an expensive one for anyone else.
Is HireVue better than SmartRecruiters for high-volume hiring?
For the interview step, usually yes. For the application step, no, because HireVue does not read the pile. High-volume hiring has two bottlenecks. The first is deciding which of the 500 people who applied are worth anyone's time. The second is getting the ones who are worth it through a first interview quickly, before a competitor hires them. SmartRecruiters High Volume addresses the first with AI candidate screening and the second partly with Winston Chat and scheduling. HireVue addresses only the second, and does it in more depth, with on-demand video, structured interview guides and game-based assessments.
That leads to the practical rule. If recruiters are drowning in applications, HireVue will not help until something has narrowed the pile, and inviting all 500 applicants to a HireVue interview means paying and waiting for 500 interviews. If the pile is already manageable and the problem is interview capacity or consistency, HireVue earns its keep. Some teams find that a full assessment platform is more than the role needs, and that a skills test builder that grades the answers automatically covers the one test they actually use. That is worth checking before signing an enterprise interviewing contract.
Can you use HireVue with SmartRecruiters?
Yes, and it is the combination HireVue itself uses. HireVue sells a certified integration that embeds its interviews and assessments inside the SmartRecruiters workflow, so candidate statuses and scores sync back to SmartRecruiters as the system of record. A HireVue post on the partnership says the integration is self-service and can be set up "within hours", and states: "At HireVue, we use the combination of SmartRecruiters and HireVue to power our own Talent Acquisition process." SmartRecruiters' founder is quoted on the same page calling HireVue's interviewing products "ideal additions".
So for many buyers the question is not "HireVue or SmartRecruiters" but "SmartRecruiters alone, or SmartRecruiters plus HireVue". The answer depends on whether your interviewing step needs more than the scheduling and chat SmartRecruiters already includes at High Volume.
What changed with SAP buying SmartRecruiters?
SAP completed its acquisition of SmartRecruiters in September 2025, and SmartRecruiters now leads with an offer for SAP SuccessFactors customers. For a SuccessFactors shop this can simplify the stack. For everyone else, it is a reason to ask how long current pricing and terms are guaranteed, and whether a multi-year contract signed now carries a renewal uplift cap. HireVue has had its own consolidation: it acquired Modern Hire in May 2023, so buyers comparing HireVue with Modern Hire are now comparing two parts of the same company.
Which should you buy?
- You need an ATS and you hire at volume. SmartRecruiters High Volume is the relevant tier, because that is where AI screening begins. Budget for a quote well above the $14,995 Essential figure.
- You already have an ATS and your interviews are the bottleneck. HireVue fits, particularly if your ATS is SmartRecruiters, Workday or another system with a certified connector.
- You want both and have the budget. Run SmartRecruiters as the system of record and HireVue for interviews and assessments, as HireVue does.
- Your real problem is the size of the pile, not the ATS or the interview. Neither enterprise purchase is the cheapest fix. Other HireVue competitors and screening layers address that step directly.
Where a published-price screening layer fits
Most teams comparing HireVue and SmartRecruiters for high-volume hiring are trying to fix one specific job: reading every application and deciding who deserves an interview. That job does not require a new ATS or an interviewing platform. It requires something that reads the resumes you already get.
Prescreener does that alongside whatever ATS you run, SmartRecruiters included. It reads every inbound resume as it arrives, applies your knockout and eligibility rules the same way to every applicant, scores role-fit with the written evidence behind each score, and ranks the pile so recruiters open the strongest matches first. It never auto-rejects: a recruiter makes every call. If you do buy HireVue later, you invite a ranked shortlist rather than the whole pile, which shrinks the interview volume you pay for. Plans are published at $199, $499 and $1,290 a month on the Prescreener pricing page, and our bulk resume screening page shows how the ranking works on a large pile.
