Recruitee vs SmartRecruiters: Pricing and AI Screening Compared
Neither vendor publishes a usable price, and SmartRecruiters' one published figure buys the tier with no AI in it. Essential starts at $14,995 and the three tiers above it are quote-only; Tellent Recruitee publishes nothing on any of its three plans. The difference that decides the purchase is not price: Recruitee's AI reports how many criteria each applicant met and refuses to rank, while SmartRecruiters ranks through Winston from the third tier up. Both pages read September 2026.

Short answer: Neither vendor publishes a usable price, and SmartRecruiters' one published figure buys the tier with no AI in it. Read on September 16, 2026, SmartRecruiters lists Essential at "Starting at $14,995" and marks Professional, High Volume and Complete as Request Pricing. Tellent Recruitee publishes no figure on any of its three plans. The difference that actually decides the purchase is not price at all: Recruitee's AI reports how many of your criteria each applicant met and explicitly refuses to rank, while SmartRecruiters ranks through Winston but only from the third tier up.
These two get compared constantly, usually by directory sites that quote a monthly rate for both and move on. The rates are wrong, and the comparison is aimed at the wrong thing. Below is what each vendor states on its own pages today, what each one hides, and the four numbers a US mid-market HR team should have in hand before either demo.
Recruitee vs SmartRecruiters pricing: what each one publishes
SmartRecruiters publishes exactly one number and Recruitee publishes none. On smartrecruiters.com/pricing, Essential reads "Starting at $14,995" and the three tiers above it read Request Pricing. On recruitee.com/pricing, Start, Advance and Optimize all carry full feature lists and a Get started button that opens a demo request, with no rate anywhere.
Recruitee does publish how the price is built, which is more than most quote-only vendors manage. Its FAQ states that subscriptions are tiered on the plan you choose, the number of employees at your organization, and your billing period, and that paying annually gives a 20 percent discount. It also states plainly that contracts carry a minimum commitment of one year, though you can pay monthly inside that term. So the variables are public even though the result is not.
| Line | Tellent Recruitee | SmartRecruiters |
|---|---|---|
| Published rate | None on any plan | Essential "Starting at $14,995" |
| Plans | Start, Advance, Optimize | Essential, Professional, High Volume, Complete |
| Quote-only tiers | All three | Three of four |
| What drives the price | Plan, employee count, billing period | Not published |
| Annual discount | 20 percent, published | Not published |
| Minimum term | One year, stated | Not published |
| Free trial | Yes, no credit card | Not offered on the pricing page |
| Tier that screens resumes with AI | Advance, capped | High Volume, the third tier |
Is Tellent Recruitee cheaper than SmartRecruiters?
Almost certainly yes, and the gap is a market tier rather than a discount. SmartRecruiters' published floor of $14,995 is an annual enterprise figure for the tier that includes no AI at all, and its own tier descriptions aim Professional at mid-size and corporate organizations and Complete at large global enterprises. Recruitee is sold to growing mid-market teams and prices on headcount, so a 60-person company lands nowhere near $15,000.
That is a comparison of list positions, not of quotes, and it is the honest limit of what anyone can tell you from public sources. We do not restate the monthly figures that comparison sites attach to either vendor, because neither vendor publishes them and figures like that in this category are routinely contradicted by the vendor's own page. A number you cannot check is worth less than an honest blank.
The more useful framing for a budget conversation is the shape of the commitment. Recruitee will tell you before the call that you are signing for a year, that annual payment saves 20 percent, and that your headcount moves the rate, so you can model three scenarios and walk in with a range. SmartRecruiters publishes a floor and nothing about how you climb from it. If your finance team needs a defensible number in a spreadsheet this week, Recruitee is the one you can approximate.
Does Recruitee or SmartRecruiters screen resumes with AI?
Both do, and they produce fundamentally different output. Recruitee's AI Screening Assistant reads each applicant's CV, cover letter and screening question answers against up to six criteria you define, then reports how many were met, for example five of six, with reasoning under each one. Recruitee's own documentation states it will not give you rankings, suitability scores or top-candidate lists. SmartRecruiters ranks.
Recruitee's refusal is a deliberate design position rather than a missing feature, and it is defensible. A tool that hands a recruiter an ordered list invites the recruiter to work down it, which is exactly the behavior US regulators are watching. A count of criteria met keeps the judgment with a person. It is also the reason Recruitee is a poor fit for genuinely high inbound volume, because when ninety applicants all meet six of six, the assistant has told you nothing about who to call first.
SmartRecruiters takes the opposite position through Winston, its AI layer. The Professional tier adds an AI Talent Matching Engine and an AI-powered Hiring Agent. AI-powered Candidate Screening does not appear until High Volume, the tier SmartRecruiters marks Most Popular and aims at retail, seasonal, hospitality and healthcare hiring. So SmartRecruiters will order your pile, and the ordering starts two tiers above the only price it publishes.
| Question | Tellent Recruitee | SmartRecruiters |
|---|---|---|
| Reads inbound resumes with AI | Yes, CV, cover letter and screening answers | Yes, AI-powered Candidate Screening |
| Produces a score | No, by stated policy | Yes, through Winston matching |
| Produces a ranked list | No, by stated policy | Yes |
| Output shape | "5 of 6 criteria met" with reasoning | Match ranking against the role |
| Criteria limit | Up to 6 | Not published |
| Cheapest tier with it | Advance, second of three | High Volume, third of four |
| Monthly volume cap | 100 credits on Advance | Not published |
| Separate matching feature | AI Matching Assistant, 3 searches a month on Advance | AI Talent Matching Engine, from Professional |
How many candidates can Recruitee screen per month?
One hundred on the Advance plan. Recruitee's pricing page lists the AI Screening Assistant on Advance with 100 credits a month and on Optimize with full functionality, and the Start plan does not include it at all. The separate AI Matching Assistant, which searches your existing database rather than reading new applications, is capped at 3 searches a month on Advance and 65 on Optimize.
Run that against real inbound volume before you sign anything. A single well-promoted role on a large US job board routinely draws 200 to 400 applications. On Advance, one requisition can exhaust the entire monthly allowance before you open the second job. Caps like this are invisible in a demo, where you screen four sample candidates and everything feels instant, and they bite precisely when a hiring spike arrives and you need the tool most.
Three searches a month on the Matching Assistant is the figure that surprises people more. That is not three searches per job or per recruiter. It is three, on the tier a mid-market team is most likely to be quoted. If searching your own database of past applicants is part of why you are buying, Optimize is your floor, and Optimize has no published price either.
Recruitee vs SmartRecruiters vs Teamtailor: which one fits a mid-market team?
Teamtailor belongs in this comparison because buyers shortlist all three together, and because it sits on Recruitee's side of the philosophical split. Teamtailor's AI reads the resume, cover letter and screening answers and returns a check or a cross against each criterion, never a score and never a rank. Between the three, SmartRecruiters is the only one that will order your applicants, and it is also the only one that publishes a number.
Pick on volume and on who does the deciding. If you run 5 to 30 open roles with moderate inbound and want hiring managers genuinely involved in the review, Recruitee and Teamtailor are both good products and the collaborative workflow is real. If you run seasonal or high-volume hiring where a requisition draws hundreds of applications and nobody can read them, SmartRecruiters High Volume is the only one of the three built for it, and you should expect an enterprise contract to match.
One operational detail that decides more evaluations than it should: whoever wins, panel interviews still have to be coordinated across several calendars, and every one of these platforms handles that with its own scheduling module of varying quality. If yours is the bottleneck, it is worth pricing scheduling software for business teams separately rather than upgrading an entire ATS tier to fix a calendar problem.
| Consideration | Recruitee | SmartRecruiters | Teamtailor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Target buyer | Growing mid-market | Mid-size to global enterprise | Employer-brand-led mid-market |
| Published price | None | $14,995 floor on Essential | None |
| Ranks applicants | No | Yes, from High Volume | No |
| Screening output | Criteria met, out of 6 | Match ranking | Check or cross per criterion |
| Best at | Collaborative review, hiring manager involvement | High-volume and multi-region hiring | Careers site and candidate experience |
| Weakest at | Volume, capped at 100 screenings on Advance | Small budgets and fast procurement | Telling you who to call first |
What to ask in both demos
First, which tier am I being quoted, and does that tier include AI screening? At Recruitee the answer must be Advance or Optimize. At SmartRecruiters it must be High Volume or Complete. A quote against Start or Essential is a quote for a product without the feature you came for, and that is the single most common way these two evaluations go wrong.
Second, show me 300 applications screened, not four. Ask Recruitee what the screen looks like when ninety candidates all met six of six, and how a recruiter decides the order. Ask SmartRecruiters to show the ranked output on a real requisition with real volume, and to explain what the ranking is computed from.
Third, what happens when we exceed the allowance? Recruitee's 100 screenings and 3 matching searches a month have no published overage rate. SmartRecruiters publishes no volume figures at all. Get both in writing, with the unit and the price of the next unit.
Fourth, since we hire in the United States, how does the product support EEOC guidance on selection procedures and New York City Local Law 144 bias audits, and what documentation would we hand a regulator? Tellent's compliance material leans toward EU frameworks, which usually means a strong privacy posture. A strong EU privacy posture is not an answer to a US employment-law question. Ask specifically, and ask before the trial ends.
The gap both of them leave open
Strip away the tier names and the same hole is in both products. Recruitee reads everything and then declines to order it. SmartRecruiters will order it, from the third tier, at an enterprise price, with no published volume. Neither one gives a mid-market US team a published rate for the specific job of reading every inbound application and returning it ranked with the reasoning attached.
That is the job a dedicated screening layer does, and it runs alongside the ATS you pick rather than instead of it. Every inbound application gets read, your knockout and eligibility rules get applied identically to all of them, and the pile comes back in order with written evidence under each placement. It never auto-rejects: it ranks and flags, and a recruiter decides. The rate is published before the call, at $199 a month.
If you are still narrowing the field, our detailed breakdowns of Recruitee alternatives, SmartRecruiters alternatives and Teamtailor alternatives go tier by tier through each one. For the wider field, SmartRecruiters pricing traces the $14,995 floor through the contract terms, and the ATS pricing comparison puts every published US rate in this category on one page.
